Culture Clash

Monday 3 April, 18.00 – 19.00
Suitable for all ages

Musicians, dancers and singers from Brent representing different backgrounds, ethnicities and nationalities are collaborating for the Tricycle Theatre’s Culture Clash. Through their art, different groups will come together for Takeover 2017 to create new pieces of work. Featuring the renowned St Michael’s and All Angels Steel orchestra’, Armenian and Bollywood dancers it is not to be missed.

Puppetry Workshop
Venue: Yellow Pavilion, Engineers Way, Wembley Park, HA9 0EG
Tuesday 4 April, 10.00 – 12.00
Suitable for all ages.

Harlesden’s Mahogany Carnival Designs is offering a workshop for Brent’s budding puppeteers. For 90 minutes you will learn how to wield and move with exciting, unique and colourful designs. By the end of the session you’ll be ready to perform with professionals! Mahogany has performed at numerous events such as the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations and has contributed to BBC commissioned events.

Mapping Futures: A Q&A about Creativity in Brent
Venue: Yellow Pavilion, Engineers Way, Wembley Park, HA9 0EG
Tuesday 4 April, 15.30 – 16.30
Suitable for all ages.

An opportunity for Brent’s youth to come together and discuss creativity and exploration, express opinions and ideas, in order to look at how they can build and better themselves whilst also changing their communities. With a panel including Brent Youth Parliament representative Dilan Dattani and Authors of the Estate poet Andre Anderson as well as local business owners and prominent figures, this promises to be an engaging and inspiring event.

Mariah Idrissi: Talk and Q&A
Venue: Yellow Pavilion, Engineers Way, Wembley Park, HA9 0EG
Tuesday 4 April, 17.30 – 18.30
Suitable for all ages.

A talk and Q&A with Brent resident and former Tricycle Youth Theatre member Mariah Idrissi. Mariah is known for being the first hijab-wearing model to be featured in a campaign for H&M, and is also signed to ‘Select’ model management. The discussion will focus on Mariah’s life, achievements and obstacles she has faced, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Wembley Stadium due to disappear behind more high rise flats

Brent Planning Committee on December 14th will be recommended by officers to approve plans LINK to replace the present Powerleague pitches adjacent to Wembley Stadium, the Wembley Arena and Brent Civic Centre, with two new buildings comprising 340 100% private rented flats and retail space.

The pictures speak for themselves but officers think the plans are superior to those submitted in 2007 - although a lot has changed in the area since then. Officers say that no affordable housing needs to be provided on this site as it is over-provided on other sites in the overall Quintain development.

Powerleague will be temporarily housed in a 'meanwhile' space at Wembley Retail Park close to the Yellow Pavilion. Incidentally the controversial Powerleague proposals for Kingsbury High School appear to have stalled.

The housing will be 11% studio, 41% one bedroom, 46% 2 bedrooms and 3% 3 bedrooms (yes I know it doesn't equal 100% bu that's what the report says). There will be an artificial grass lawned terrace at first floor level and another terrace on the 10th floor as well as a small public square.

The retail space will allow 'outdoor cafe culture' to spill out into the area.

Wedged between the Stadium and the Arena clearly there will be noise problems but 'acoustic solutions' are planned and potential buyers can't really be aware of the potential problems.

Personally I feel that the loss of the shouts and thumps of footballs from the Powerleague will take away from the atmosphere of the area.  At present there is live football, in a sense, at Wembley Stadium every day. A far better place for the shouts and thumps than at the back of suburban gardens!

The reports says that notices of the application were sent out to nearby owners and occupiers including the the London Designer Outlet, Wembley National Stadium, Hilton Hotel and Raffles House but rather surprisingly at the time of the publication none had responded. There is no record of any representations from Tokyngton ward councillors.

June activities at the Yellow Pavilion and new venue details

I’m very pleased to attach June’s programme of activities for the Yellow Pavilion.  Later this month we are moving to premises on Engineer’s Way -- see the programme for details and look out for an email update in a few weeks.

New this month:
·         Half term arts and crafts for children age 5+ and adults on Wed 1st and Friday 3rd June 2-4pm (£2 including materials)
·         Sing pop, soul and jazz to lift spirits – no audition needed to join this local singing group.
·         Mixed 5-a-side football for adults – come as an individual and we’ll make up teams or enter a team
·         Auditions to compete in Streetdance XXL Championships for age 8-16.

We also have our regular programme including:
·         Jewellery making (now Thursday at 6.15pm)
·         Sunday morning football sessions for 3-8 year olds
·         Friday lunchtime fitness with drumming
·         Women only classes in kickboxing and Cuban boxing
·         Zumba
·         Arts and crafts for adults

Fabric dyeing workshop

Here’s some ways to get involved in the Yellow Pavilion in the next few weeks. They are mostly one-off activities we’re looking for help with so your time commitment is limited. We offer a friendly welcome, a chance to meet local people and be part of your community and of course we’ll show you what to do.


Children needed to play football!

Do you have a 3-8 year old who’s into football? We’re looking to try out a possible new instructor.  and have a trial session to see if we like what they’re offering. It’s this Thursday 17th March from 5-5.45pm. Please let me know if you and your child or children (boy or girl of course) would like to take part. It’s and is free and indoors with a small ball.
  

Open Mic

Do you want to organise an Open Mic with musicians, maybe poets and other performers? We’ve some interest from performers and people to help and are looking for someone who can take a lead with help.


Help with arts and crafts workshops over the Easter holidays. For all of these we already have someone leading the activity and they’re looking for help:

 
Organise a local table tennis league
 
We’re looking for a volunteer or two to start a table tennis competition to find the best player in Wembley Park using our outdoor table. Skills needed are being well-organised, enjoy emailing and can use your email account for this and good with communicating. We can help with publicity of course.


Fixing electronics

We hope to run an event in May with volunteers helping people fix electronics such as monitors, smartphones or vacuum cleaners. If you have skills or an interest in this area let me know please.

Women only fitness and self defence classes in Wembley Park

From the Yellow Pavilion

 We've three women's fitness classes every Tuesday and Wednesday during the day. Just turn up, no need to book. The Yellow Pavilion is on Olympic Way between Wembley Park tube and Wembley Stadium. It's on the right just where the pedestrian ramp into the Stadium starts, opposite a crane and near the local Sainsburys.

Self defence for women

Tuesdays 3.45-4.45pm, £5.

Our self-defence classes will keep you fit and also teach you the techniques to defend yourself – this also includes theory during classes. Open to beginners. The room has a screen for privacy. Taught by Nadia Sibany. Just turn up or contact Jamila on 0786 866 2812.

Cuban boxing for Women, mums and young children

Tuesdays 4.50-5.50pm, from 2-7yrs for boys, or any age for girls and adults. £5 per session for each adult or child.

Great fun for kids and women to get fit and learn how to defend themselves at the same time. Taught by Nadia Sibany. Contact Jamila on 0786 866 2812 for details.

Kick boxing for women

Wednesdays 11am-12pm, £5.

Kick boxing is a great exercise to keep fit or lose weight and can also be used as a self-defence technique. Taught by Nadia Sibany or Souad Gharib. Just turn up or contact Jamila on 0786 866 2812.

Lots of activities available at the Yellow Pavilion, Wembley Park

The Yellow Pavilion is providing a useful function in its temporary site. I am assured it will be relocated to another temporary location when building work starts on the theatre and the activities will eventually be housed in a permament community centre on the Alto site.
